Project Purpose & Description |
The Latin American and the Caribbean – Southeast Asia Academic Dialogue Forum is an online forum that aims to promote regular academic dialogue and foster academic cooperation between scholars dedicated to inter-regional and comparative studies of several issues involving countries and organizations of both regions, taking advantage of the use of online platforms, which will make possible to bridge geographical distances and reduce external dependence on economic resources. Coordination is expected to rotate regularly each time between study centers dedicated to Latin America and the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia Studies in both regions. The topics to be discussed, which will be defined by the coordinator on duty, will seek to improve understanding between the people and, by mean of academic south-south cooperation, the rapprochement between the countries of Latin American and the Caribbean and Southeast Asia. Among the expected outcomes of the forum, is the elaboration of a policy-oriented statement that mentions the challenges and opportunities, as well as contains recommendations and good practices, to improve academic cooperation and internationalization policies of the universities of the countries of both regions, while nurturing, by means of track-2 para-diplomatic linkages, the knowledge not only of governmental agencies to improve inter-governmental relations but also of private sector actors to improve trade and investments flows between the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and Southeast Asia. |

Activity Description & Outcome |
This first event is organized by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies of the Department of Asia and the Pacific of the Institute of International Relations of the National University of La Plata, with the support of the centers and scholar dedicated to Southeast Asian Studies from other universities of Argentina, such us the National University of 3 de Febrero, University of Buenos Aires, National University of Chaco Austral, Catholic University of Córdoba, National University of Córdoba, National University of Lujan, National University of Rosario, Open Interamerican University and Salvador University. Also the Argentina section of Latin American Association of Asian and African Studies (ALADAA), Federal Council of International Studies (COFEI), Argentine Network of Professionals for Foreign Policy (REDAPPE), the Argentine Chamber of Commerce for Asia and the Pacific, and the MERCOSUR ASEAN Chamber of Commerce provide assistance in its organization. Almost 40 scholars from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela from Latin America and the Caribbean, and from the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam from Southeast Asia are expected to participate. The proposed topics are historical relations between countries of the two regions, teaching languages experiences, academic cooperation, economic studies of regional integration processes and trade relations, and analysis of the regional political dynamics.
