Project Purpose & Description

The project is an groundbreaking solution whose pilot plan was promoted by the Organization of American States, the National Council of Science and Technology (CONCYT), the National Secretary of Science and Technology (SENACYT/FODECYT), and MARN. It was applied in one transporting unit at MARN for four months with plates O-580BBH model 1997 brand International. It guaranteed to reduce the emission of O2, CO, NO, SO2, NOX, CO2 and the overall consumption of fuel on internal diesel combustion engines.

The work done by engineering students from Universidad Galileo de Guatemala has the objective to promote and integrate hybrid water based systems through a water generator which produces oxyhydrogen during transportation, to decrease fuel consumption and the emission of greenhouse pollutants to the atmosphere. With successful results, the hybrid hydrogen cells will be up scaled into ten units used for employee transportation in governmental organizations.

Activity Description & Outcome

The project consists in the installation of ten hybrid hydrogen cells in the compartment meant for the water tank from buses that transport employees on a daily basis. The first four months are meant to select and install the cell in the vehicles. MARN will arrange to work with other Ministries and Secretaries of State headquartered in Guatemala City in order to determine the less efficient and the most gas emitting diesel engines. The election depends on the exhaust’s generation of contaminants evaluated by the European Emission Standards (EURO III) indicated by the Bacharach’s readings. The condition of the oil, mileage, and internal motor temperature will be taken into account before as well as after the project has taken place. Aided by GPS system, the location each vehicle is monitored so it is able to register the kilometers traveled, average and maximum velocity, and engine’s current performance.

Once the installation is complete, the next 6 months are to study efficiency behaviors. For this, a group of technicians will be provided with permission from each institution to control fuel levels and analyze data regularly. During this period of time the team will train employees in the maintenance department, so that MARN can rely on the application afterwards.
