Project Purpose & Description
FEALAC World Tsunami Awareness Day was organized to raise awareness about the devastating impact of tsunamis and to promote disaster risk mitigation within the youth community in Ponorogo, Indonesia. By commemorating this day, we aim to encourage greater collaboration, share knowledge, and enhance youth resilience to mitigate the risks associated with tsunami.
Activity Description & Outcome
Points of discussion:
- Tsunami mitigation in Indonesia, notably post-2024 Aceh tsunami, has advanced successfully with the Maritime Museum establishing a public-accessible research center, tsunami sites, and plans for a monument. Recent research from the tsunami study center delves into how communities affected by tsunamis cope with post-disaster trauma.
- Indonesian Archive's Agency (ANRI) role in archive reconstruction, especially land-related, involved collaboration with the government. Following reconstruction, ANRI promoted public awareness of disaster risk mitigation, collaborating with various entities, including Japan.
- FEALAC JVP 2023 alumni, Eduardo Olivares Concha underscores the need for government-initiated community disaster mitigation training since the 2010 earthquake. Chile's established earthquake and tsunami early warning system accurately monitoring seismic activity and potential tsunamis.
- The National Commission on Violence Against Women prioritizes gender perspectives in disaster preparedness, addressing unmet needs, such as open bathrooms, especially for vulnerable victims in refugee centers.
