Project Purposes In commemoration of FEALAC Day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea and the FEALAC Cyber Secretariat are hosting the '2024 Voices of Young FEALAC: Ideas for a Better SPCSDCC Connection,' following the success of the '2023 Voices of Young FEALAC: Ideas for a Better TITM Connection.' The primary objectives of this event are to hear the voices of FEALAC youth in revitalizing cooperative regional initiatives between East Asia and Latin America, to advance the institutionalization of the SPCSDCC Working Group, and to nurture the next generation of FEALAC leaders.

This idea contest involves FEALAC Young Leaders (FEALAC Supporters), who have dedicated their efforts to enhancing the visibility of FEALAC both domestically and internationally. They have studied a range of cooperative initiatives and case studies from FEALAC member countries. This year holds special significance as they strive to identify methods to strengthen SPCSDCC cooperation projects for both East Asian and Latin American countries. Activity Description ■ Each team, consisting of 2-3 FEALAC Young Leaders from different FEALAC member countries, is required to choose one field from the SPCSDCC (Socio-Political Cooperation, Sustainable Development, Climate Change) Working Group and develop a project idea centered around their chosen field, presenting project proposals for a FEALAC regional initiative.

■ Language: Korean or English
■ Duration of presentation: 7-8 minutes
■ Assessment criteria: ▴ Understanding of FEALAC, ▴ Idea specification and creativity, ▴ Expected effectiveness, ▴ Practicability, etc.
■ Two teams will be selected for the Grand Prize and Excellence Award, respectively.

■ The cooperative ideas suggested by the FEALAC Young Leaders will be considered for FEALAC’s next regional project after assessing their feasibility through a tendering process.
Outcomes The young leaders presented their project ideas based on one of FEALAC’s Working Groups' topics: Socio-Political Cooperation, Sustainable Development, and Climate Change(SPCSDCC). Most of the ideas were well-aligned with these three cooperative topics, aiming to revitalize and strengthen regional cooperation between East Asia and Latin America.

The judges, Ms. Min Boram (Director of the Latin American and Caribbean Cooperation Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea), Ms. Crystal Lee (Programme Advisor, FEALAC Cyber Secretariat), and Mr. Sin Bongwoo (Director of UNESCO i-WSSM), were invited to evaluate the young participants’ ideas.

Here are the topics suggested during the event:

Team 1. FEALAC Climate Change Future Project (CCFP): Sustainable Development Solutions for Migration and Food Issues
Team 2. 2024 FEALAC Climate Synergy Expo: Global Solutions for a Shared Future
Team 3. Towards the Circular Economy: Recycling Marine Waste
Team 4. FEALAC Eco-Incubator: Empowering Start-ups for a Sustainable Future
Team 5. FEALAC Green Building Network
Team 6. Sustainable Fisheries Projects for East Asia and Latin America
Team 7. Response to Climate Change and Sustainable Development through Microalgae-based Biofuel Production
Team 8. FEALAC Green Mobility Challenge: For Disabilities

Among these, Team 7 won the Grand Prize (1st Prize), and Team 3 won the Excellence Prize (2nd Prize). All project ideas were fruitful in exploring ways to enhance regional cooperation between the two regions, East Asia and Latin America.

The young participants, consisting of 24 university and graduate students from 8 FEALAC member countries (East Asia: China, Korea, Mongolia, the Philippines, and Viet Nam; Latin America: Bolivia, Colombia, and Peru), have been engaged in various activities to increase the visibility of FEALAC.

Next Steps The "Voices of Young FEALAC" has been held regularly since its inauguration in 2020 in commemoration of FEALAC Day (September 1), organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea and the FEALAC Cyber Secretariat. The theme of this event changes annually, based on FEALAC’s four Working Groups' cooperative topics and the FEALAC Trust Fund.

Past Themes:
(2020) Ideas for ‘Wide-Projects’
(2023) Ideas for ‘TITM Regional Projects’
(2024) Ideas for ‘SPCSDCC Regional Projects’

In this vein, next year, the “2025 Voices of Young FEALAC: Ideas for a Better STIE Connection” is planned to be held. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea and the Cyber Secretariat look forward to continuously hearing the voices and creative ideas from the young generation, who will be the next leaders of FEALAC.
