The JVP is Singapore’s annual national project under the FEALAC umbrella, which brings journalists from Latin America to Singapore, to enhance understanding between both regions at the people-to-people level. To date, Singapore has organised 21 runs of the JVP since 2000, hosting over 100 journalists from Latin America.
Activity Description
Participants will be able to meet various political office holders and government agencies to gain a better understanding of Singapore’s policies on, among other areas, energy, e-government, water management and urban planning.
Outcomes
The 22nd edition of the FEALAC Journalists’ Visit Programme (JVP) took place in Singapore from 13 to 16 May 2025. This year’s programme saw the largest and most diverse group of JVP participants to date – Singapore welcomed 10 journalists from eight different Latin American countries (i.e., Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay) for the four day-long programme.
During their visit, the journalists engaged with several Singapore agencies that oversee areas such as trade and investment, urban development, food security, housing policies, and heritage preservation. They also had a candid dialogue session with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Singapore, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, during which he emphasised the potential for more multi-faceted exchanges between Asia and Latin America. The participants also had the opportunity to visit a wide range of local sites, including Gardens by the Bay, Marina Barrage, and Our Tampines Hub.
The journalists left with a deeper understanding of Singapore’s development story, multicultural society, and domestic policies, as well as a better appreciation of the areas of common interest and potential cooperation between the East Asia and Latin America regions.
Since its first run in 2000, Singapore has hosted more than 130 journalists from 18 different Latin American countries through the JVP, which aims to promote interregional understanding and cultural awareness. As Singapore’s flagship project under the FEALAC umbrella, the FEALAC JVP continues to serve as an avenue to build connections and enhance people-to-people links amongst FEALAC member countries, across our two geographically distant and culturally distinct regions.
